The Indian Railways launched the first Shatabdi Express in the year 1988 as a mark of respect to celebrating the centenary or the 100 anniversary of the first Prime Minister of the Independence India.
The first ever Shatabdi Express operated between the National capital New Delhi and Gwalior and, later on, extended till Bhopal. The train is now called as Bhopal Shatabdi Express.

The name Shatabdi is derived from the Indian Language Sanskrit, Hindi, Marathi, Telugu and many more and is the verbal meaning of centenary or hundredth anniversary.
